18 November is a public holiday and a non-working day in Croatia: the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Homeland War and the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja. On that day in 1991, 48 civilians and 15 defenders were killed in Škabrnja. The commemoration usually begins with a gathering at the western entrance to the village, in Ambar, followed by the commemorative programme, the Column of Remembrance to the mass grave memorial, the laying of wreaths and candles, mass in the parish church, and the walk to the St Luke cemetery where the victims' names are read out. More than ten thousand people attend; a special traffic regulation and a drone flight ban are in force. The municipality has not yet published the 2026 programme.
