About
The little church of St Mary stands at the end of Ambar, a hamlet of Škabrnja. It was built in the 11th century as a centralised six-lobed structure and belongs to the group of such churches in the Old Croatian sacred architecture of northern Dalmatia. It was originally dedicated to St George; in the 13th century it became the parish church of the medieval villages of Podberjane and Starovšane, today's Zemunik Gornji, and was then extended, vaulted and given a new façade. In 1991 it was hit by artillery shells and surrounded by minefields; it was restored in 2000. It is a protected cultural property, reference Z-1332.
